Manchester United tell Solskjaer his job is ‘safe for now’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly been told his job is ‘safe for now’ at Manchester United despite the mounting pressure on his position as manager.

Solskjaer’s position was already under scrutiny prior to last weekend’s 5-0 thrashing at the hands of arch-rivals Liverpool, a result and performance which has heightened calls for change at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are without a win in four Premier League fixtures and have conceded 11 goals across their past three games in all competitions, with the manner of their humiliating home defeat on Sunday having left Solskjaer on the brink.

The mood has somewhat shifted from the public backing that followed the defeat to Leicester last week, but The Athletic are reporting that the Norwegian will be given a chance to rectify his side’s issues, even amid reports he has lost the belief of sections of the dressing room.

United’s case for replacing Solskjaer is weakened by a lack of obvious, credible contenders to succeed the under-fire manager, with the Red Devils’ hierarchy understood to have reservations over the managerial style of Antonio Conte.

Zinedine Zidane is another available name to have been mentioned, but is not understood to be in a rush to return to management after leaving Real Madrid last summer.

United return to action with a trip to face Tottenham this weekend, before a Champions League return at Atalanta and Manchester derby clash with Premier League champions City, in what shapes as a defining week for Solskjaer.
