Manchester United make Motta managerial candidate

Manchester United are considering Thiago Motta as a candidate to become the club’s next manager, but could face competition from Juventus for the Bologna boss.

Motta has earned admirers across Europe for his work with the Italian side, who are fourth in the Serie A table and competing for Champions League qualification.

The 41-year-old took over Bologna last season with the side struggling near the bottom of the division and led I Rossoblù to ninth in the table, the club’s highest league finish in over a decade.

That progress has been continued in the current campaign and Bologna are targeting Champions League football for the first time. Bologna have not finished inside the top four of Serie A since 1966/67.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Manchester United are tracking his progress should the Red Devils sack Erik ten Hag at the end of the campaign.

The Dutchman is under pressure with United struggling to make the Premier League’s top four and new minority owners Ineos could decide on change. England manager Gareth Southgate has also been linked with taking over at Old Trafford, following the conclusion of Euro 2024 this summer.

United could face competition for Motta, however, with Juventus also reportedly keen. Massimiliano Allegri’s second spell in Turin could reach its conclusion at the end of the campaign, with Juventus currently third in the table, 20 points adrift of league leaders Inter Milan.
