Manchester United look at Alderweireld alternatives

Manchester United are looking at alternatives to Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld according to reports today.

United have been linked with a move for the Belgian defender, with some reports suggesting that Jose Mourinho wants to have a deal in place by the time the World Cup kicks off – although that is just two days away now.

Alderweireld has been linked with a move away from Spurs for a few seasons, and despite being available next summer for just £25 million, the North London club have reportedly slapped a £70 million price tag on the defenders head.

Widely regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, Tottenham believe they should receive a similar transfer fee to that which Southampton squeezed out of Liverpool in January, a world record £75m for Virgil Van Dijk.

While a move to Manchester United is anticipated in some quarters, the Manchester Evening News claim that Alderweireld isn’t United’s first choice defender, and the club are looking at alternatives.

They claim that a number of defenders are on United’s radar, including Raphael Varane, Jerome Boateng, Kalidou Koulibaly, Milan Skriniar, Alessio Romagnoli, Jose Gimenez and Caglar Soyuncu. They have also been linked with Sevilla defender Clement Lenglet.

However having already wrapped up deals for Fred and Diogo Dalot, and potentially looking at signing a left-back, a new central midfielder, and a new striker, its shaping up to be a busy summer at Old Trafford – and thats not to mention clearing out some of the fringe players.
