City and United battle to sign £60m defender

Manchester United and Manchester City have been linked with making a big money money for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez.

The two Manchester giants are battling against Serie A Champions Juventus for the youngsters signature who has struggled to hold down a first team place in the Rojiblancos side this season, despite signing a new contract in the summer.

That new deal which runs until the summer of 2021 and includes a £60m release clause, however reports suggest that considering Gimenez’s lack of involvement that Atletico could be willing to do a deal for less than that release clause.

It is not the first time that Manchester United have been linked with the young Uruguayan defender, with Jose Mourinho thought to have been interested this summer, before spending £30m on Victor Lindelof.

However Lindelof has not covered himself in glory since his arrival Benfica, and bore the brunt of Manchester United fans frustrations on Saturday in United’s less than convincing dis0lay against newly promoted Huddersfield Town.

The Swede was at fault for Huddersfield’s second, and ultimately decisive goal after having come on as a first half substitute.
