Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is ready to launch a bid to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel.
Witsel, who only signed for Dortmund last summer, was believed to have been a target for Mourinho in the last transfer window before the Portuguese opted to sign Fred for £52m from Shakhtar Donetsk.
With Fred adapting slowly to English football, and the likes of Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba failing to perform on a consistent basis, ESPN are reporting that Mourinho is ready to reignite his interest in the Belgian enforcer having scouted Witsel during the recent international break.
Since arriving in Germany from Chinese Super League outfit Tianjin Quanjian, the 29-year-old has shone as Dortmund have raced to the top of the Bundesliga, nine points clear of champions Bayern Munich in fifth-place.
It is believed that Mourinho is likely to wait until the summer to add to his midfield options, and whilst Dortmund would be reluctant to sell, a significant offer for a player signed for just £18m may persuade the Germans to let Witsel go.
