Manchester United ‘increasingly confident’ of €50m deal

Manchester United are increasingly confident of agreeing a deal to sign Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich.

Erik ten Hag’s team remain in negotiations with the Bundesliga side over a deal for De Ligt, who is free to leave Bayern after falling out of favour at the Allianz Arena.

Ten Hag worked with the Netherlands international at Ajax and appointed De Ligt captain of the Dutch side while still a teenager.

The 24-year-old has emerged as United’s leading target to reinforce their backline after having an offer rejected for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, while UEFA blocked a proposed move for Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo due to new rules over transfers between clubs of shared ownership.

De Ligt is currently with the Netherlands at Euro 2024, where the Oranje will face England in the semi-finals on Wednesday evening.

He has given the green light for a move to Manchester United and is prioritising a move to the Premier League, despite rival interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed an agreement on personal terms has almost been reached with De Ligt’s representatives and United are ‘increasingly confident’ of making the defender their first summer signing.

Negotiations continue between the teams over the structure of a deal understood to be worth in the region of €50m (£42.3m) with part of the fee to be paid in add-ons.
