Report: Manchester United ‘seriously considering’ signing Jan Oblak

Manchester United are ‘seriously considering’ making a big money move for Jan Oblak this summer according to reports.

The Old Trafford outfit have been desperately trying to tie David de Gea down to a new long-term contract for what seems like forever, however, their attempts have so far been fruitless.

The Spaniard is claimed to be keen on achieving a salary in line with the clubs highest earner, Alexis Sanchez, who earns an eye-watering £500,000-a-week for seemingly doing very little.

With one year left on his current deal at the club, recent reports have suggested that Manchester United could decide to cash in their four-time player of the year this summer, rather than risk losing him for free next year, with Juventus, Real Madrid and PSG all having been linked with having an interest.

With De Gea just one of a number of stars potentially heading out of the Old Trafford exit door this summer, ESPN are reporting that United have identified Atletico Madrid ‘keeper Jan Oblak as a possible replacement.

Oblak only signed an improved deal at Atletico in recent weeks, although that was seen as a way to raise his release clause rather than to tie him down for the long-term, with his new buyout clause standing at €120 million (£103m) – just €20m higher than its previous level.

The report claims that United are ‘seriously considering’ triggering that new release clause in order to land Oblak, who is rated as one of the top ‘keepers in the world, with the Slovenian keeping 20 clean sheets in his 35 La Liga appearances this season.

However, it is thought that he would only consider moving to a fellow Champions League club – something which is far from certain for Manchester United, who are currently three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with just two games left to play.
