Manchester United turn their attention to Carabao Cup action on Tuesday night, as the Red Devils welcome League One outfit Barnsley to Old Trafford.
The Tykes have already beaten two teams in this competition, with a penalty shootout victory away at Wigan in the first round followed by an upset win over Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United at Oakwell.
After lifting the League Cup in 2022 and the FA Cup last season, Ten Hag is hoping to add another domestic success to Man United’s trophy cabinet this year.
Manchester United vs Barnsley match preview
Form
Man Utd: DWLLW
United got back on track last weekend with a comprehensive 3-0 win over a struggling Southampton side, a score line that mirrored their derby defeat to Liverpool prior to the international break.
Erik Ten Hag’s men rode their luck early on with Cameron Archer squandering a chance to put Southampton in front with a poorly struck penalty that was comfortably saved by Andre Onana.
The Red Devils compounded the Saints misery as barely two minutes after the spot kick incident, Matthijs de Ligt recorded his first goal in English football with an accurate header beyond the fingertips of Aaron Ramsdale.
After grabbing a foothold in the game, United dominated their opponents and doubled their advantage shortly after with Marcus Rashford’s strike evading everyone and finding the bottom corner.
Alejandro Garnacho was introduced into proceedings in the second half and he wreaked havoc on a tired Southampton defence. He skipped past Saints captain Jack Stephens before being sized down from the defender in a way that was deemed dangerous and the Englishman was given his marching orders.
The Argentine stroked home United’s third to give the Red Devils their second win of the campaign after a disappointing run of form.

Barnsley: DWWWL
Barnsley have begun their season in a positive manner, but an uncharacteristic 3-0 capitulation to Stevenage on the weekend sees them enter this Carabao cup game with a cloud over their heads.
Darrell Clarke’s men currently lie seventh in the League One standings, just outside of the playoffs on goal difference, although the season is still very much in its infancy.
They booked their place in the third round of the cup after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United, with a Max Watters strike being the difference at Oakwell.
Barnsley’s Adam Phillips is the joint top goal scorer in League One with four goals in six appearances and he could cause United some issues.

Last Meeting
Barnsley 0-2 Manchester United, League Cup, 27th October 2009
You have to go back 15 years to find the last time these two clubs faced each other, with goals from Danny Welbeck and Michael Owen being enough to see the Red Devils progress to the quarter-final stage of the EFL Cup.
Sir Alex Ferguson made eleven changes for the trip to Oakwell, but the team filled with second-string players still had way too much for their opponents.
Gary Neville was guilty of a lack of discipline and dismissed for an ugly challenge on Adam Hammill, but Barnsley couldn’t make the numerical advantage count.
