Manchester United and England star Luke Shaw has admitted that he almost lost his leg after he suffered a horrific break during a Champions League fixture in Holland against PSV Eindhoven in September 2015.
The 23-year-old defender had struggled for form or fitness ever since, but this season he finally seems back to his very best and has finally become a first-team regular at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho.
His excellent showings in a Manchester United shirt have been rewarded by England boss Gareth Southgate who has called Shaw into his Three Lions squad for the upcoming international games against Spain and Switzerland.
Speaking to the press ahead of the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures Shaw revealed just how serious his injury in 2015 could have been.
“At the time, they were thinking about flying me back,” said Shaw.
“If I’d flown back, I would probably have lost my leg because of the blood clots in the leg.
“No one knows I was really close to losing my leg. I didn’t know that until six months later when the doctor told me. I’ve got two scars down my leg where they had to cut it open and pull them out, the clots. I feel really strong now and my right leg is as it was before my leg break.”
