Manchester City vs Feyenoord – Match preview and team news

Manchester City return to Champions League action this week as they welcome Dutch outfit Feyenoord to the Etihad Stadium.

As it stands, Pep Guardiola’s side are lying just outside of the guaranteed Round of 16 spots after collecting seven points from their opening four games. Meanwhile, Feyenoord are only a point behind the Premier League champions.

Ruben Dias and Mateo Kovacic are both expected to miss out tonight, while Oscar Bobb and Ballon d’Or winner Rodri are long-term absentees.

Chirs-Kevin Nadje is suspended for Feyenoord after the midfielder was shown a straight red card against RB Salzburg. Wolves loanee Hugo Bueno is a doubt for tonight’s match alongside Ibrahim Osman and captain Quinten Timber.

Form

Manchester City: LLLLL

It has been troubling times for the blue half of Manchester after losing five games on the bounce, the club’s worst run of form since 2006.

The Citizens tasted defeat at home for the first time in 52 matches at the weekend as Spurs embarrassed City in a 4-0 rout.

That result epitomised the current state of affairs and condemned City to a third league defeat in a row. The loss followed a 4-1 capitulation at Sporting in Europe and a Carabao Cup exit, again at the hands of Tottenham.

A reaction is needed tonight to avoid them losing for a sixth successive match and prevent them from slipping further adrift of the top eight.

Feyenoord: LWLWW

Feyenoord currently occupy fourth position in the Eredivisie, eight points off last campaign’s champions PSV Eindhoven.

The 16-time Dutch league winners have won two and lost two of their four Champions League games so far, with both triumphs coming away from home against Girona and Benfica.

In fact, Brian Priske’s team are unbeaten away from home this term in all competitions, a statistic that bodes well for the visitors.

Last time out in the competition, they fell to a 3-1 home defeat to RB Salzburg in a big blow to their qualification hopes. However, a 3-0 dismantling of Heerenveen at the weekend sees them travel to Manchester with confidence.

Last Meeting: Manchester City 1-0 Feyenoord, Champions League, 21st November 2017

A last-gasp effort from Raheem Sterling snatched victory for City the last time the two sides met.

City and Feyenoord were drawn together in the Champions League for the 2017/18 campaign and Pep Guardiola’s side had previously smashed Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team 4-0 in Rotterdam.

The hosts dominated proceedings in the return, but the opening goal proved elusive for the majority of the contest. Sergio Aguero uncharacteristically spurned a couple of presentable opportunities, but City eventually broke the deadlock.

With two minutes remaining of normal time, Ilkay Gundogan slipped in Sterling who audaciously chipped the ball over Feyenoord goalkeeper Brad Jones and into the top corner to send a wave of relief around the Etihad.

The English club topped the group, while their Dutch counterparts were eliminated after finishing bottom.
