Manchester City will play their final pre-season friendly against Atlético Madrid on Sunday, ahead of next week’s Community Shield match with Arsenal.

City arrive at this game having won one of their last two warm-up fixtures under new manager Enzo Maresca. They were held to a 1–1 draw by Inter Milan in Hong Kong on 1 August, then lost 3–1 in the subsequent penalty shootout. On 5 August in Seoul, they earned a more comfortable 3–1 victory over the K-League All-Stars; goals from Omar Marmoush, Savinho and Phil Foden delivered Maresca’s first win as manager. The squad will be aiming to build momentum and sharpen tactics ahead of the Community Shield meeting with Arsenal on 16 August.

Manchester City team news

Erling Haaland is still with the Norway squad following their World Cup run and will not be available, while midfielder Rodri remains sidelined after back surgery on 28 July.

Rayan Cherki, Marc Guéhi, Elliot Anderson and Nico O’Reilly are also unavailable due to World Cup commitments.

Jack Grealish and Kalvin Phillips were left off the Asia tour entirely and are expected to leave the club soon. Enzo Maresca is likely to make extensive changes to his lineup, offering minutes to newcomers and squad players.

Omar Marmoush could start up front after an impressive substitute appearance in the last friendly, while Phil Foden and Savinho are expected to play in attacking positions.

Rico Lewis, Abdukodir Khusanov, Matteo Kovacic and Tijjani Reijnders are all candidates for starting roles as City work on fitness and team understanding ahead of the Community Shield against Arsenal.
