Manchester City have reached an agreement to re-sign former captain Ilkay Gundogan from Barcelona.
Positive talks between all parties have led to an agreement being reached and Gundogan is set to return to the Etihad just 12 months after departing for Spanish football.
Barcelona are prepared to offload the 33-year-old to free room in their wage bill to register new signings.
The Catalans will allow Gundogan to return to the Premier League on a free transfer with Pep Guardiola having approved the deal to bring the midfielder back to Manchester City.
The Citizens have been targeting a midfielder who can operate as a number six or eight and Gundogan’s availability and familiarity with Guardiola’s methods make the German a logical signing. Gundogan spent seven seasons at Manchester City during his first stint with the Blues after becoming Guardiola’s first signing in the Premier League.
He made 304 appearances, scoring 60 goals, and captained the club to a Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble in his final season in 2022/23. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Gundogan will sign a one-year deal.
