Man Utd open Martial contract talks

Manchester United have opened talks with Anthony Martial regarding extending his stay at the club according to reports.

The 22-year-old forward made 45 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring 11 goals and providing nine assists.

Despite his decent return, he has been recently linked with a summer exit from the club after seeing his involvement in the first team more restricted since the January signing of Alexis Sanchez.

Martial still has two years remaining on the five year deal he signed in 2015 when he made the £57 million move from Monaco, and while United are keen to extend his stay at the club, they face an uphill battle to convince him to commit that his future is at Old Trafford having lost his place in France’s World Cup squad.

Chelsea and Tottenham are believed to be interested in the youngster, who has shown glimpses of absolute brilliance since his arrival at the club, and United are understandably reluctant to sell him to a Premier League rival.

It has however been speculated that he could be used as a make weight in order to land long-term target Willian from the Blues.

Juventus are also thought to be interested in signing Martial, and United know that if they were to keep the Frenchman at the club beyond this summer, his potential value would plummet next year and almost leave them powerless.

Martial, along with fellow outcast Marcus Rashford, bore the brunt of Jose Mourinho’s frustrations after their defeat to Brighton earlier this month, with the Portuguese saying their displays showed why Romelu Lukaku always started up front when fit.
