Man Utd not desperate for Lingard to leave despite reports of Nice talks

Manchester United are reportedly not desperate to offload Jesse Lingard this month despite reports the midfielder’s representatives have held talks with Nice over a potential loan deal.

Lingard has not made a Premier League appearance for the club so far this season with his minutes restricted to just two starts in cup competition, the midfielder having fallen down the pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and seemingly heading towards an exit.

According to Sky Sports, Lingards representatives have been contacted by Ligue 1 side regarding a potential loan move to France side on loan for the rest of the season.

Real Sociedad and Sheffield United have also been linked with a move for the 24-cap England international, who has not featured at international level for over 18 months with his career at the highest level having stalled.

Lingard’s contract was set to expire at the end of the season but the Red Devils opted to trigger a one-year extension clause in the deal, though it is believed that decision was made to retain some value in the player ahead of a potential transfer, rather than as an indication he remains part of the club’s long-term plans.

However, the Telegraph are reporting that Manchester United are yet to be contacted by Nice, whilst the club are not actively looking to offload the star with Solskjaer believing the midfielder could prove ‘useful’ in his squad over the second half of the season with the Red Devils competing on three fronts.

United are focussing on trimming their bloated squad this month and confirmed the £1.8m sale of Timothy Fosu-Mensah to Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday, with Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo also tipped to depart on permanent deals.

There may also be exits for both Phil Jones and Brandon Williams with the latter a loan target for both Newcastle and Southampton, whilst Odion Ighalo will return to Shanghai Shenhua when his loan expires on January 31.
