Manchester United look like they are on course be one of the big spenders once again this summer, with rumours of potential new signings flooding the media every day.
Despite being second in the league and in the FA Cup semi-finals, the Red Devils are seemingly in some kind of turmoil, especially with situations surrounding Jose Mourinho, Alexis Sanchez, Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw.
United are known to be looking to add at least on central midfielder to their ranks to replace the retiring Michael Carrick, and may need a second midfield signing should Marouane Fellaini continue to refuse to sign a new deal at the club.
They have also been linked with a number of left-backs, with Jose seemingly having lost faith once again with Luke Shaw.
They do have plenty of options in central defence however, with Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Daley Blind all capable to playing centrally at the back, but that hasn’t stopped speculation that Mourinho is in fact chasing a new first choice centre back to partner Bailly.
United have been linked with the likes of Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti and Spurs’ Toby Alderweireld in recent weeks, yet another name that keeps cropping up, even since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson, is Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane.
Jose Mourinho is known to be a big admirer of the Frenchman, and was actually in charge of Los Blancos at the time when he made the move from RC Lens to the Bernabeu.
According to the Daily Mirror today, despite Varane only recently signing a new deal which sees him contracted to the club until 2022, Real Madrid are willing to let him leave, providing that they receive an offer of £50 million – which seems to be the going rate these days for high end centre-backs. The report claims United could make a move, but only for about £40m 24-year-old.
