Manchester United have been huge boost in their hopes of signing Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann and could complete a transfer to Old Trafford as early as January according to reports.
Griezmann was heavily linked with making an £89m move to the Premier League leaders earlier this summer, with the Frenchman describing his chances of making a move as six out of ten.
However, following the Court of Arbitration upholding Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban which prevented Los Rojiblancos from making any signings, including a potential replacement for Griezmann, the winger decided announced that he would remain in the Spanish capital, calling a move a ‘dirty trick’.
He subsequently signed a new deal with a bumper €200m release clause to prevent any clubs trying to lure him away. However, now that the the transfer window has closed, that release clause has now been halved to its original level.
Atletico Madrid will once again be able to complete signings as soon as the January window opens, meaning they could find a replacement for their star man should Manchester United come calling once more.
The only obstacle for United for a January transfer could be Griezmann being unavailable for the latter stages of the Champions League, where it is expected he would be Cup tied after having assumedly having played for Atletico in the upcoming group stages. However, the Manchester Evening News claim that Griezmann is indeed keen to make the move during the next window.
One potential replacement for Griezmann would be Chelsea striker Diego Costa, who failed to secure a return to Madrid befor Friday’s transfer deadline.
