Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has admitted that he turned down a move to Liverpool in favour of moving to the Etihad and working with Pep Guardiola.
The Germany international worked with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp during their time together at Borussia Dortmund. However, he has now revealed that he also turned down a move to Spanish giants Barcelona, but is delighted to be working with Pep Guardiola, who he claims is the best coach in the world.
“I was very close to signing for Barcelona but in the end it was not so. In any case now I am where I want [to be] and I am very happy.
“[Jurgen] Klopp wanted me. But I decided to go with [Pep] Guardiola, because he had the philosophy closest to my game. Klopp is like a father to me. Guardiola, a genius, a master. He is the best coach in the world.” the 27-year-old said.
Gundogan moved to England in the summer of 2016, although his first season was cut short by a serious knee injury.
The talented midfielder has now fully recovered however, and is starting to put in the type of classy midfield displays that made him so highly sought after just a couple of seasons ago.
