Man City not targeting Premier League title challenge following Everton draw

Man City defender Manuel Akanji admits that the Premier League title is “not a target” for the club after dropping more points.ย

Bernardo Silva put the reigning champions in front with a well placed finish after just 13 minutes of their encounter with Everton at the Etihad Stadium.

The hosts dominated proceedings but the Toffees managed to score with their first real chance of the game as Iliman Ndiaye equalised in the 36th minute.

Erling Haaland was handed an opportunity to put Man City back in front from the penalty spot in the second half, but his effort was saved by Jordan Pickford.

City have now won just one of their last 13 games in all competitions, but Akanji felt that their performance deserved more than a point.

“I think we did way more for the game,” he told Prime Video. “We created lots of chances, unfortunately we were only able to score one goal and we conceded one out of nothing but that is how football is.

“This was a game today we were able to score three or four goals, but they didnโ€™t go in but then to be honest with you it canโ€™t happen that we nearly lose in the last minute.

“We are trying to attack but I think it was like a six versus two in front of our goal. We still need to believe to the last moment that we can win the match.”

The results leaves Man City 11th in the Premier League table, 11 points off leaders Liverpool, leaving their hopes of retaining the title for a fifth consecutive year in tatters.

“The season is not finished but it’s not a target for us at the moment,” Akanji said on winning the league. “We need to focus game by game and the next game against Leicester City will not be easy as well now, in the shape we are in.

“We need to focus on the positives. We did a lot of things great. We defended well and we attacked well, but were not able to finish as well as we wanted to or we could have scored three or four goals.”
