Manchester City failed to live up to their billing as Champions League favourites by slipping to a shock 2-1 defeat to French side Lyon tonight at the Etihad.

Premier League Champions City started sloppily and found themselves 2-0 down at half-time after goals from Maxwel Cornet and Nabil Fekir.

Although Bernardo Silva pulled one back for City in the second period Lyon held on for a famous win, with centre-back John Stones admitting afterward that it was a frustrating night for Pep Guardiola’s men.

“Really disappointing. To concede two goals like we did is very frustrating,. We came in at half-time a bit deflated. We picked ourselves up and played a better second half but it was frustrating.’’ Stones told BT Sport.

“It is the first game. Still early days. We put pressure on ourselves. There is no outside pressure. We know our strengths and weaknesses. We go again in the next game. There are still a lot to play and we should be positive about that.”
