The England international is understood to be torn between leaving his boyhood club and moving to City, where he would be provided with Champions League football and the opportunity to compete for the game’s biggest prizes.

According to ESPN however, City are ‘confident’ that Grealish will be their player before the start of the new Premier League season, with the defending champions facing Tottenham in their opening fixture on August 15.

City are understood to have offered highly-rated youngster Morgan Rogers in part-exchange, though Villa’s preference is for a straight cash deal that will eclipse the £89m Premier League record set by Paul Pogba’s move to Manchester United in 2016.

Villa are pressing ahead with their own transfer plans and have agreed a deal to sign Leon Bailly from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of around £30m, the winger set to add to Dean Smiths’ attacking options at Villa Park.
