Luke Shaw says Bruno Fernandes has quickly established himself as a ‘leader’ at Manchester United and praised the midfielder’s ‘amazing’ start to life at the club.
Fernandes has made an immediate impression since his mid-season arrival at the club from Sporting Lisbon, scoring three goals and providing a further four assists in all competitions in addition to being named as the Premier League‘s Player of the Month for February.
Shaw has been left impressed by the impact of the Portuguese international and says Fernandes has settled quickly into his new surroundings, with a positive influence both on the pitch and inside the dressing room at Old Trafford.
“He’s been amazing for us,” the Man Utd left-back said during a ‘Combat Corona’ FIFA tournament.
“The maddest thing is he hasn’t actually been there that long but what he’s brought in and the quality he has – of course on the pitch – but inside the dressing room as well. He’s a leader for us too.”
Fernandes’ arrival had also coincided with an upturn in form for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side prior to the suspension of football amid the coronavirus crisis, United unbeaten in 11 games in all competitions and progressing in both the FA Cup and Europa League.
Shaw admits the suspension came at an unfortunate time for the club given their recent performances, but insists the health and welfare of the public remains the priority during these unprecedented times.
“That’s why we were all disappointed to be fair, but obviously we had to stop.
“We were really confident, results were going our way, but the most important thing is people’s lives and people’s health but we understand the situation.”
