Chelsea progressed to the Carabao Cup final by beating Spurs in a penalty shoot out tonight at Stamford Bridge.
An injury depleted Spurs side went into tonight’s game up 1-0 from the first-leg at Wembley, but without star attackers Harry Kane and Dele Alli.
Chelsea dominated the first period, taking a deserved lead trough N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard. Spurs put in a spirited display in the second period though and Fernando Llorente pulled a goal back with a close range header, which sent the game straight to penalties after 90 minutes.
Brazilian defender David Luiz would hit the decisive spot kick that sends Chelsea through to the final, after Eric Dier and Lucas Moura missed for the visitors.
Speaking after the game Luiz admitted it was a great feeling to score the winning penalty, and he felt that his side deserved to progress.
“It’s a great feeling,’’ Luiz told Sky Sports.
“In the first half we could have scored three or four. Also in the second half we controlled it.
“Spurs had one opportunity and they scored it. The reaction and spirit of the team, I’m so happy.
“It’s frustrating when you control the game and have the chance to lose on penalties because you never know with penalties.
“The team did amazing. We created a lot of chances and pressed well.”
Chelsea will face Man City in the final at Wembley on 24 February.
