Luis Enrique emerges as ‘frontrunner’ for Chelsea job

Luis Enrique has emerged as the frontrunner to replaced Graham Potter and become Chelsea’s next head coach.

Enrique is understood to have a number of admirers among the Chelsea hierarchy and is available after leaving his role with the Spanish national team, after a disappointing performance at the World Cup in Qatar.

The 52-year-old previously had huge success in charge of Barcelona, who he led to a La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League treble during the 2014/15 campaign.

Chelsea are currently assessing their options following the decision to sack Potter, whose tenure was brought to an end after less than seven months in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Potter’s exit came with Chelsea 11th in the Premier League table and discussions are ongoing over the club’s next appointment. The Sun are reporting that Enrique has emerged as the frontrunner for the role, ahead of ex-Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann.

Nagelsmann was sacked at Bayern last month, but Chelsea would reportedly need to reach an agreement with the Bundesliga champions to hire the German who has been placed on gardening leave.

That could prove complicated given the two clubs could meet in the Champions League semi-finals, should both progress from their last eight ties this month.
