Liverpool XI vs Southampton – Predicted lineup and team news

Liverpool have the chance to open up an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League when the Reds travel to Southampton on Sunday.

Arne Slot’s side will hope to capitalise on a defeat for Manchester City and extend their advantage at St Mary’s. It’s been an almost flawless start in English football for Slot, who has guided the Merseysiders to the top of the Premier League and Champions League standings.

A win on the south coast would be the perfect warm-up for huge fixtures against Real Madrid and Manchester City next week.

Liverpool team news

Slot confirmed in Friday’s pre-match press conference that Liverpool will be without Trent Alexander-Arnold at Southampton. The right-back has not returned to training since sustaining a hamstring injury against Aston Villa before the international break. Liverpool face a nervous wait to see if the 26-year-old can feature in their upcoming clashes with Real Madrid and Manchester City.

There was better news on Virgil van Dijk, who has been passed fit to face his former team. Alisson Becker is back in training for Liverpool but the clash with Southampton will come too soon for the goalkeeper.

Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott remain out for the Reds but are all nearing returns as Liverpool move closer to a full complement of options.
