Liverpool host Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, looking to close the gap on a Brighton side four points and two places above them.
Andoni Iraola’s side are fifth in the Premier League with 12 points from seven games, having won three, drawn three and lost one. Liverpool have won four of their last five matches across all competitions, with Manchester City’s visit to Anfield the only defeat in that run. Liverpool have faced the second-fewest non-penalty expected goals of any side in the division this season (7.50), an underlying marker Iraola’s side will hope to build on against a prolific Brighton attack.
Liverpool team news
Dominik Szoboszlai has been ruled out with a hamstring injury that was aggravated in last weekend’s win at Brentford, with Trey Nyoni having already deputised for him off the bench. Victor Munoz is also sidelined, while Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Hugo Ekitike remain long-term absentees alongside Jeremie Frimpong. Ekitike has been out since suffering an achilles injury earlier in the season, with no return date yet given. Iraola has spoken of the physical toll of five matches in 28 days on his squad, but gave a positive update on Bradley Barcola’s fitness ahead of the weekend.
Trey Nyoni is set to retain the central midfield spot he filled from the bench against Brentford, partnering Alexis Mac Allister in a double pivot. Florian Wirtz is expected to continue centrally behind Alexander Isak, with Bradley Barcola and Rio Ngumoha providing width either side of him. Ronald Araujo, Jérémy Jacquet, Virgil van Dijk and Milos Kerkez are expected to make up the back four protecting Alisson.
Liverpool predicted lineup
Liverpool possible starting XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Araujo, Jacquet, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Nyoni, Mac Allister; Barcola, Wirtz, Ngumoha; Isak
