Jeremie Frimpong has said he can’t wait to play in the Premier League and admits it was always ‘the plan’ to return to English football.

Frimpong has signed for Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of £29.5m after a successful spell in Germany.

The right-back joined Leverkusen from Celtic in 2021, having come through the academy system at Manchester City without making a first-team appearance.

In Germany, Frimpong has evolved into one of Europe’s most productive wing-backs and helped Leverkusen to a maiden Bundesliga title success in 2023/24. Xabi Alonso’s side became the first-ever German team to win the title without losing a game.

The Netherlands international arrives as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold and admits he can’t wait to test himself in the ‘best league in the world’.

“For me, I think the Premier League is the best league in the world,” he said to Sky Sports/

“I’ve always wanted to play in the Premier League. I grew up in Manchester, I know how the Premier League is. I watched the league, always. It was the plan for me to come back, yes.”

Asked specifically about the attraction of signing for Liverpool, Frimpong admitted it was a privilege to be joining the reigning Premier League champions.

“Champions, you know. Do you understand? Obviously when I was at Leverkusen, I know what it feels like. Joining a champion team, it’s a privilege. Especially Liverpool. From watching them on LFCTV to actually playing for them, it’s mad, it’s really mad. It’s crazy.”
