Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch says his recent improvements are due to Arne Slot giving him more freedom to attack this season.
The Netherlands international played a key role in the Reds’ 2-1 win over Everton on Saturday, opening the scoring before setting up Hugo Ekitike in the first half.
The 23-year-old was one of the side’s best performers in the first half of last season when he was deployed in the no.6 role. It was the first time he had ever taken up the position and was surprisingly impressive, although his effectiveness waned later in the campaign.
Gravenberch has been operating in more advanced areas of the pitch this term, which he believes suits his strengths as a player.

“The coach has given me the confidence,” he told TNT Sports after the game.
“This season, we have more freedom in the midfield. Last season I was only in the six (position), like deep, and now I can go more forward which you see today.
“I think my strength is also there (in attack) so I’m happy with that, and also with the goal.”
Everton pulled one back in the second half when Idrissa Gana Gueye fired the ball past Alisson Becker, but Liverpool held on for the win with a resolute second-half performance. It was the first time this season they have not needed a goal in the last ten minutes of a match to secure victory.
“When they scored they came on more and more,” Gravenberch told BBC Match of the Day. “We had the chance to score one more but if you don’t do it they keep coming and we keep defending. We have a good defending line so it was still 2-1 and I am really happy with the three points.
“We had the opportunity to score more but 2-1, especially in this game, you have to defend. Next time we don’t concede.”
