Liverpool are admirers of Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong but have reservations over a potential transfer.
Frimpong has been placed on a shortlist of potential targets should Trent Alexander-Arnold depart at the end of the season.
Alexander-Arnold’s current contract expires in the summer and Real Madrid have been heavily linked with a move to sign the 26-year-old. A contract offer has been submitted by Liverpool to the vice-captain but an agreement has not yet been reached.
Frimpong is a player who is admired at Anfield and has been linked as a potential replacement. The Netherlands international has been a key part of Bayer Leverkusen’s success in recent seasons and formed part of the club’s German double-winning campaign last season.
The 24-year-old scored nine goals and created seven more in the Bundesliga last season as Leverkusen won a maiden German title. His emergence as one of Europe’s most effective attacking wing-backs has alerted several top clubs.
However, Sky Germany are reporting that Liverpool have reservations over signing the ex-Manchester City and Celtic defender.
Arne Slot’s preference for a traditional right-back in a back four means Frimpong is not a ‘concrete transfer target’ at this stage. The Dutchman has excelled for Leverkusen in a more advanced wing-back position, ahead of three central defenders.
Will Alexander-Arnold sign a new Liverpool contract?
Alexander-Arnold is one of three high-profile names out of contract at Liverpool next summer. Negotiations are ongoing between Liverpool and the defender, alongside submitted proposals to extend the deals of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.
The England international has insisted negotiations with play out behind closed doors.
“I have been at the club 20 years now, I have signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public – and this one won’t be either,” he told Sky Sports News recently.
