Liverpool receive transfer boost in Virgil van Dijk chase

Liverpool have been handed a big boost in their hopes of signing Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.

Liverpool are one of a number of clubs that are interested in signing the former Celtic centre-back but have been boosted by the news that he is keen on linking up with Jurgen Klopp.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City have all been linked with making a move for the defender over the last few months, but it seems that the Merseyside club have taken the lead in the race for his signature.

Southampton are believed to be reluctant to do business over their prize asset, but it is thought a bid of £50million should be enough to secure the Dutchmans signing.

Southampton have a history of selling some of their biggest stars to the Premier League big guns, with Liverpool signing Sadio Mane, Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyde from the south coast club. Luke Shaw, Morgan Schneiderlin and Callum Chambers have also been sold to Manchester United and Arsenal over recent years.

Van Dijk has made 68 appearances and scored seven goals for the Saints since his £13m transfer from Scottish champions Celtic.
