Liverpool have reportedly ‘turned down’ an approach from Real Madrid to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold in the January transfer window.

The Spanish club have been linked with a move for the right-back as his contract with the Reds enters its final six months.

The 26-year-old can negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from today and sign for a new team on a free transfer in the summer if he doesn’t agree new terms with Liverpool.

Spanish outlet Marca last week claimed that Alexander-Arnold informed the club that he intends on joining Real Madrid at the end of the season, but Liverpool dismiss these claims.

Real made their interest in the player official this week after they ‘contacted’ the Merseyside outfit to see if they could possibly sign the England international this month, according to The Athletic.

Liverpool made it ‘clear’ that they have ‘no interest’ in negotiating Alexander-Arnold’s exit in January by not discussing figures for a potential sale.

While Real will continue in their attempts to agree a pre-contract with the player, Liverpool ‘retain hope’ he will put pen to paper on a new deal and remain at Anfield.

Los Blancos view Alexander-Arnold as the ‘ideal successor’ to Dani Carvajal, who has been sidelined for the rest of the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in October.
