Liverpool have overtaken Manchester United in the race to land Napoli midfielder Jorginho according to reports today.
United have been strongly linked with the Brazilian born, Italian international in recent months as they look to strengthen their midfielder this summer. Jose Mourinho has already confirmed that club captain Michael Carrick will retire at the end of the season and will join his coaching staff, while there is also a strong belief that Marouane Fellaini will leave on a free transfer.
The Belgian has just four months remaining on his current deal at Old Trafford, and despite Jose Mourinho’s public insistence he wants him to stay, Fellaini has yet to sign a new contract, which expires in just four months time.
Jorginho is just one of a number of players who have been linked with a move to Manchester United, with the likes of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Toni Kroos, Arturo Vidal and Jean Michel Seri having also being linked.
However, according to the Daily Star today, Liverpool have leapfrogged United in the race for the Napoli midfielder. The report claims that the Reds are now joint favourites to land the 26-year-old alongside reigning Italian Champions Juventus.
Jorginho has been an integral part to Napoli’s success this season, with the Italian side currently the shock leaders of Serie A, four points ahead of serial winners Juventus who have one game in hand.
Liverpool, who have already secured the signing of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig, are still looking to add an additional midfielder to their squad. Like United, the Merseyside club have their own fears that one of their midfielders will leave on a free with Emre Can expected to move to Juventus.
