Liverpool open talks with potential Jude Bellingham alternative

Liverpool have opened talks with the representatives of Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Manu Kone as the club consider alternatives to Jude Bellingham.

Jurgen Klopp is planning an overhaul of his midfield this summer and Liverpool are assessing potential additions ahead of the transfer window.

The Reds withdrew their interest in Bellingham – who is closing in on a move to Real Madrid – due to the cost involved to sign the Borussia Dortmund teenager and German publication Bild are reporting that Liverpool are eyeing a Bundesliga alternative.

Kone has impressed across two seasons at Monchengladbach and will feature for France at the u21 European Championship this summer.

Liverpool could look to secure a deal before that tournament, having hired German Jorg Schmadtke as their new sporting director on an initial short-term deal this week.

Kone ranks among the Bundesliga’s leading players for tackles (9th) and successful take-ons (8th) and would add dynamism to a Liverpool midfield that will be depleted following the confirmed exits of Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner. He is valued at around €40m-45m.
