RB Leipzig are negotiating personal terms with the Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott.

The 22-year-old is on the verge of a major career change as he seeks regular first-team football.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Leipzig view Elliott as the ideal replacement for Xavi Simons, who is expected to join Chelsea. The German club has already made contact with Elliott’s representatives and held discussions with Liverpool over the structure of the deal.

While the transfer could take multiple forms – including a loan with option, obligation to buy, or a permanent deal – Elliott’s enthusiasm for the move appears to be a driving factor in advancing negotiations.

Since Leipzig first showed interest, the negotiations have come far; both teams are now in active talks over the economic conditions. Elliott is valued by Liverpool at around £50m, though the Reds would reportedly settle for £40m if the sale contains a buy-back provision.

Elliott has battled for consistent playing time at Anfield, and made only two Premier League starts in 2024/25. Despite a frustrating season, he impressed during the summer, earning the Player of the Tournament award as England won the u-21 European Championship.

Elliott has already spoken personally with Leipzig manager Ole Werner and sporting director Marcel Schäfer regarding the possible transfer.

The midfielder’s awareness that minutes could be limited at Liverpool, particularly after the club’s massive summer spending and Slot’s tactical choices, has led to his likely exit.
