Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has questioned whether Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata has the necessary fighting qualities to thrive in the Premier League.
Morata joined Chelsea for a club record fee of £58 million from Real Madrid last summer, as a replacement for Atletico Madrid bound Diego Costa.
The 25-year-old Spain international started his Blues career in fine form, but his he struggled with fitness and confidence issues the longer the season went on, finishing with 15 goals in 48 appearances.
Despite scoring his first goal of the season last weekend against Arsenal, Souness reckons Morata is not good enough for a side who wants to challenge for the Premier League title.
“Chelsea remain a top striker short of being genuine contenders to win the Premier League,” Souness wrote in The Times.
“If they still had Diego Costa waging a war on defenders and driving them to distraction, I could see Maurizio Sarri’s side challenging Manchester City and Liverpool
“But I’m not convinced that Alvaro Morata has the stomach for a title fight.”
