Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, was quick to dismiss any questions today about whether Virgil van Dijk was the best defender in the Premier League.
In typical Klopp fashion, he highlighted how happy everyone at Liverpool is with how the Dutch defender has performed for the club since his £75 million arrival from Southampton in January.
“I am really happy with him. Virg knows that with his skills and quality he has a big responsibility, you have to be spot on every day. That is what everyone expects.’’ Klopp told his Friday press conference.
“He has qualities like Joe [Gomez] has, like Dejan [Lovren] has, like Joel [Matip] has, so that is really good for us.”
Van Dijk’s arrival has helped the Liverpool defence evolve from what was a running joke to one of the meanest in the Premier League. Just five goals have been conceded by The Reds in their opening 11 league games of the season.
It’s still early days but it looks like any ‘success’ Liverpool may enjoy this season will be based upon a solid defensive setup rather than a gung-ho attacking approach.
Van Dijk will be hoping for another clean sheet on Sunday when Liverpool face Fulham at Anfield.
