Liverpool reportedly failed in ‘100m’ bid for Premier League midfielder

Liverpool reportedly failed in a £100m bid to sign Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimarães during the summer transfer window, according to reports in Spain.

Liverpool overhauled their engine room during the summer with a quartet of midfield additions, but saw high-profile moves for Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia break down, with the duo instead signing for Chelsea.

AS are reporting that the Reds also failed in an approach to sign another Premier League midfielder, having offered a club-record £100m in a bid to sign Guimarães from Newcastle.

The Brazil international has become a fan favourite since signing for the Magpies from Lyon, producing a run of excellent performances as Newcastle secured Champions League qualification last season. In January, he was named as the North East Football Writers’ Association’s Player of the Year for 2022.

Newcastle are said to have met the offer from Liverpool with a ‘resounding no’, with the 25-year-old viewed as a crucial part of the club’s Saudi-funded project.

Newcastle will compete in the Champions League for the first time since 2002/03 this season and have been drawn to face Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan in a fascinating group.
