Liverpool have another injury concern to monitor after Cody Gakpo was forced off early in the Netherlands’ 2-1 Nations League win over Serbia.
Gakpo was withdrawn after just 17 minutes after struggling to shake off the effects of a heavy challenge from Saša Lukić five minutes earlier. The Liverpool forward appeared to be suffering from an ankle problem.
Netherlands head coach Xavi Hernández was hopeful the injury was not serious but said the extent of the problem would only become clearer after further assessment.
“I don’t think so. It’s in the ankle. I don’t know exactly the result but tomorrow we will know. Hopefully it is not too important.”
The concern comes shortly after Liverpool striker Alexander Isak was also released from international duty with Sweden because of a minor thigh injury.
Sweden manager Graham Potter played down the severity of Isak’s problem but confirmed the 27-year-old would return to Liverpool for assessment after playing the full 90 minutes and scoring in the 2-1 win over Romania.
Liverpool will therefore be monitoring both forwards during the international break, with their next Premier League fixture against Manchester City scheduled for October 11.
