Liverpool defender Matip: Clean sheets give us confidence

Joel Matip was in an understandably positive mood after making his first start of the season in Liverpool’s 3-0 home win against Southampton.

Matip helped his team to a clean sheet while also scoring the important second goal of the game with a great header in the first half.

“We have won at the moment and we feel good, we have a clean sheet and scored three goals.

“Clean sheets give is confidence for the following games. We want to concede as few goals as possible.”

Matip’s headed goal was his first time to score for The Reds at Anfield and he enjoyed the occasion, immensely.

“My first goal at home at Anfield was an amazing feeling. A great moment.”

In a somewhat surprising decision, Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp, brought Matip into the starting lineup in place of the young Joe Gomez. Matip partnered Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the Liverpool defence. The former Cameroon international also played a significant chunk of the game alongside Gomez when Van Dijk went off with a bruised rib in the second half.

Matip may well be afforded plenty more game time in the coming weeks as Liverpool’s fixture schedule begins to get congested. The Reds will have to rotate their squad a lot more with League Cup, Premier League and Champions League fixtures to come.
