Liverpool among three clubs who can activate Schlotterbeck clause

Liverpool are among three clubs who can activate the release clause in the contract of Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck.

Schlotterbeck has signed new terms with Dortmund to commit his future to the German side, though the contract includes an exit clause for three leading teams.

According to BILD, Liverpool are among the trio, as are Real Madrid. However, Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich cannot activate the clause and would need to negotiate with Dortmund to sign Schlotterbeck.

The fee is rumoured to be between £42m and £53m, with Liverpool having been linked with signing the 26-year-old.

Though a move appears unlikely this summer after the agreement of a new deal, it’s a transfer that could be revisited in 2027.

The Reds are expected to be in the market for a left-sided centre-back in the upcoming transfer windows, with Virgil van Dijk set to enter the final season of his contract in 2026/27.

Arne Slot’s side are close to reaching an agreement on a new contract with Ibrahima Konate, while Jeremy Jacquet will link up with Liverpool in the summer. The Merseysiders agreed a deal to sign the Frenchman from Rennes in January.
