Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike.

The Premier League champions have reached terms on a transfer that will cost an initial €90m (£78m), potentially rising to €95m (£82m) including add-ons.

Liverpool have beaten Newcastle United to the signing of the Frenchman, after the Magpies saw a bid turned down earlier this month. Ekitike gave his priority to a move to Liverpool and will sign a six-year deal at Anfield, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 23-year-old arrives in the Premier League after a brilliant Bundesliga campaign. He was named in the division’s Team of the Year after helping Frankfurt to Champions League qualification. Across all competitions, Ekitike scored 22 goals and added 12 assists.

Arne Slot had made the signing of a centre-forward his priority after completing deals earlier this summer for Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz. The signing of the striker will take Liverpool’s spending this summer past £247.5m.

Ekitike’s arrival could also pave the path for Darwin Nunez to leave Liverpool, amid interest in the Uruguayan from the Saudi Pro League.

Nunez started just eight games in the Premier League last season and is exploring his options after three underwhelming campaigns at Anfield.

Luis Diaz is another who could leave Liverpool with Bayern Munich pursuing a deal to sign the winger. The German champions are expected to return with an improved bid after an opening offer was turned down.
