Messi ‘not considering’ MLS loan exit

Lionel Messi is not considering leaving MLS club Inter Miami on loan this January.

The 36-year-old has squashed speculation of a dream return to Barcelona at the end of the MLS season, after his Inter Miami side failed to reach the playoffs, according to Fabrizio Romano.

As the MLS season came to its conclusion in October, the former Barcelona star would have been free to return to Europe on loan in the post-season, but will instead spend the holidays in his native Argentina.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner will now prepare for his nation’s World Cup qualifiers against Brazil and Uruguay next month, with the world champions four wins from four in CONMEBOL qualifying, and have only lost once in the past four years.

The Ballon d’Or favourite took the MLS by storm, achieving 10 goals and one assist in just seven games on the way to Leagues Cup glory, the first trophy in the franchise’s history.

However, the Herons slumped to a 14th placed finish in the MLS Eastern Conference, finishing one place above bottom club Toronto. A run of seven games without a win to end the season coincided with Messi’s absence through injury.
