Leeds United travel to the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon looking to return to winning ways after being held at home by Manchester United.
Daniel Farke’s side are seventh in the Premier League with 10 points from seven matches, six points clear of Sunday’s hosts. Leeds have lost just once in their opening seven fixtures and remain in contention for a top-five finish this season. Farke guided Leeds to the Championship title with 100 points last season, and his side’s composed start back in the Premier League contrasts with a Sunderland team already rooted to the bottom of the table.
Leeds United team news
Mateo Joseph (knee) and Joe Rodon (hamstring) are both out through injury. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a doubt with a bruised foot, while Noah Okafor and Anton Stach are both managing adductor issues. Dan James is also a doubt with a back problem. Calvert-Lewin has scored four goals this season and would be a notable miss if he fails to recover in time, while Stach’s 10 created chances have been a key creative outlet behind the front line when he has played.
With Calvert-Lewin’s availability in question, Lukas Nmecha is set to lead the line, supported by Harry Wilson and Brenden Aaronson in behind. Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka are expected to continue anchoring midfield, with Jayden Bogle and Gabriel Gudmundsson providing width and defensive cover as wing-backs in Farke’s three-at-the-back system. James Justin, Nico Elvedi and Tarik Muharemovic are set to continue as the back three protecting goalkeeper James Trafford. No further fitness concerns have been reported elsewhere in Farke’s squad.
Leeds United predicted lineup
Leeds United possible starting XI (3-4-2-1): Trafford; Muharemovic, Elvedi, Justin; Bogle, Ampadu, Tanaka, Gudmundsson; Wilson, Aaronson; Nmecha
