Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte has described Sergio Ramos as the best defender in the world, and is aspiring to match the levels of the Real Madrid and Spain star.
If you mention the words Sergio and Ramos around the streets of Liverpool, you might hear a wide array of words that we couldn’t possibly publish here on The Football Faithful, such is the dislike of the Real Madrid captain.
Ramos – who has been embroiled in a war of words with the self-appointed world’s greatest centre-back Dejan Lovren for the last few months – did little to endear himself to the Anfield Faithful after he brought down Mo Salah in the Champions League final last season, injuring the Egyptian King, and extinguishing the Reds hopes of a sixth European crown.
While the Spaniard may be football’s ultimate master of the dark arts, Man City defender Aymeric Laporte has said that Sergio Ramos is still the benchmark that all other defenders aspire to, saying he is ‘probably the best centre-back in the world’.
“Do I want to be the best defender in Europe? Of course. Any defender will tell you that – who wouldn’t want to be the best?” Laporte is quoted as saying in the Evening Standard.
“Sergio Ramos is probably the best centre-back in the world at the moment as we know we have to match his standards or better him if we are to be as good as he is.
“City have Vincent Kompany, Nicolas Otamendi, John Stones – all great defenders and we can all learn off each other. To get to the top, you must have an edge to your game, like Ramos does.”
