Frank Lampard has said that he is disappointed that his Derby side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by his former side Chelsea.
Despite the gulf in quality on paper, Lampard’s Derby side gave it a real good go against Chelsea, twice levelling the scores after they had conceded two own goals in the first half.
However, a Cesc Fabregas strike just before the half time interval turned out to be the difference between the two sides, with the Premier League side edging through to the Carabao Cup quarter finals 3-2.
Speaking after the game though, former Blues midfielder Lampard – who was making his an emotional return to Stamford Bridge – thought that his new side deserved more from the game than they ultimately got.
“I’m disappointed. I think we deserved a draw on chances created. The difference between the sides was they scored three… actually we scored four, didn’t we? I joke because I’m proud,” Lampard told Sky Sports.
“My players had to do really selfless stuff. Who goes through clear against Chelsea like we did on goal? We created chances.
“I’m so thankful to the Chelsea fans. I left through the back door and it upset me at the time but I have nothing but great memories of this place and they thank me like that. I’m a lucky man to have a night like that and I feel it.”
