Jurgen Klopp has joked that Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s previous links to Manchester United are the reason Liverpool are not interested in signing the veteran forward following his departure from MLS.
The former Sweden international has announced he will be leaving LA Galaxy at the end of his contract, with a host of Europe’s top clubs reportedly interested in signing the forward who scored 53 goals in 58 appearances since making the move to Los Angeles in 2018.
Reports this week emerged that Liverpool were considering a shock move for the 38-year-old to bolster their forward line, though Klopp has laughed off the suggestion and joked the former Manchester United forward’s two-year spell at Old Trafford makes him an unlikely target.
“If he had not played for Manchester United before, then we might have considered him,” Klopp told Sportbladet.
“But I’m not even sure he wanted to play here. We’re a pretty intense team…”
A return to Italy looks the most likely possibility for Ibrahimovic as he looks to extend his stellar career, with Napoli reportedly interested in a player who has previously won several major honours during spells with Juventus and both Milan clubs.
