Jurgen Klopp has said he was pleased with the performance of Naby Keita after the Guinean midfielder made his long-awaited debut.
Liverpool tried to sign Keita 12 months ago and were willing to pay up to £80 million for his services, way in excess of his £48m release clause.
However, that clause didn’t become active until this summer, and his former side RB Leipzig were adamant that their midfielder was not for sale. Liverpool eventually came to an agreement with the Bundesliga club, with the player officially arriving at Anfield on July 1.
The 23-year-old – who has taken on the famous number 8 shirt vacated by Steven Gerrard in 2016 – has had an impressive pre-season for the Reds, and finally made his Premier League bow today, as Liverpool ran riot, beating West Ham United 4-0 at Anfield.
Having put in an impressive performance on his debut, Jurgen Klopp said that he was pleased with his summer signing:
“A good performance, of course,” Klopp said after the game.
“Naby is in because he is a really good footballer and from the beginning, he has settled really quick.
“Similar style of play, similar positions as he had at Leipzig.
“I’m pleased, absolutely, but that’s what we expect.”
