Liverpool’s squad recently voted on who should be their captain in the absence of Jordan Henderson and James Milner, due to recent injuries.
Virgil van Dijk won the vote with Gini Wijnaldum selected as next in line. Jurgen Klopp discussed the results today with the media.
“It probably says a lot about Virgil (he was captain), but it was not my decision,’’ Klopp told his Friday press conference
“I decided Henderson and Milner will stay as captain and vice-captain – that is the 100% logical thing to do and it would have been as well like that if we had voted.
“And then I said the next two, the players can vote, and now the two Dutch guys are in the row.”
Van Dijk has already proved himself to be a fan favourite at Anfield and it looks like he’s a popular man in the dressing room, too. The Dutch international has helped transform a previously shaky Liverpool defence into one of the meanest in the Premier League since his arrival, just 10 months ago.
Van Dijk’s Dutch teammate, Wijnaldum, has made a great start to this season and he was voted to be the club’s fourth-choice captain.
“The team decided number three for Virgil and number four for Gini Wijnaldum.’’ Klopp continued.
“If somebody had told me that that would happen in my life as a German, the two Dutch guys would have such an important role!”
