Klopp hails ‘exceptional’ Jota after return to form

Jurgen Klopp has hailed Diogo Jota as an ‘exceptional player’ after the forward’s return to form at Liverpool.

Jota has ended a barren run in front of goal with four goals in his last two appearances for the Reds, with braces against Leeds and Nottingham Forest having helped Liverpool to back-to-back wins.

The Portugal international had gone an entire calendar year without finding the net for Liverpool, but has shown signs of his finest form in recent fixtures as Klopp’s side chase European qualification.

Klopp praised the recent performances of Jota, who has started just nine times in the Premier League this season due to fitness issues.

The forward will be hoping to start for a fourth consecutive game when Liverpool face West Ham on Wednesday night and Klopp believes the 26-year-old has rediscovered his rhythm.

“It was nothing really, he just got back up to speed,” Klopp told his pre-match press conference.

“He is an exceptional player, super smart, can play a lot of different positions, he has super interesting skills for an attacking player.

“Diogo this season had a really bad injury, that kept him back, nothing else. If he stays fit he is an outstanding player.

“When you are that long injured you need rhythm, it is an ongoing season and nobody waits for you, that is the most difficult thing.”
