Jurgen Klopp was sure to take Unai Emery’s recent praise with a pinch of salt ahead of Liverpool’s meeting with Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday evening.
Klopp was eager to keep his team’s focus on their own performance and not to read too much into Emery’s pre-match comments suggesting Liverpool could remain unbeaten in the Premier League this season.
“That is not the Unai Emery I know,” Klopp told his pre-match press conference.
“This is not them waving the white flag. It will be a really tough game. We are focused on ourselves.”
Liverpool’s last meeting with Arsenal was the 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium in early November in one of only three Premier League games The Reds have failed to win this season.
“We were not as good as we can be defending-wise. I think it was in the period of the Napoli game when we didn’t do too well. We needed this couple of weeks for adjusting a few things. We did that,” Klopp added.
“They are good, strong with the ball and very lively. Their counter-attacks are crazy-quick. Aubameyang and Lacazette are a good strike two. Outstanding strikers up front, quick on the wings, a really good team.”
Klopp’s only other meeting with one of Emery’s teams was Liverpool’s 3-1 Europa League final defeat to Sevilla in May 2016.
The former Borussia Dortmund manager will be more eager than ever to taste his first victory over the Arsenal boss this weekend.
