Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Lisandro Martinez is in contention to return for Manchester United this weekend.
Manchester United travel to face Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday evening as the Red Devils look to keep alive their hopes of Champions League football.
Ten Hag’s options could be improved by the return of Martinez from injury, after the Argentine resumed first-team training. The 26-year-old has missed much of the current campaign with foot and knee issues and has made just seven starts in the Premier League this season.
A fan favourite after an impressive debut campaign last season, Ten Hag admits the return of the World Cup winner will hand his team a huge boost.
“We have one more training session but it’s most likely that we have some players back in the squad,” Ten Hag told his pre-match press conference.
“There is a chance that [Lisandro] Martinez will be in the squad. We missed him every game because he brings a composure and calmness in the team and a winning attitude which he expresses very clearly in the team and that contributes to our levels.”
Manchester United entered the international break in high spirits after an epic 4-3 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup and Ten Hag admitted it was pleasing to enter the pause with a morale-boosting win.
“It was a wonderful break, always good to go into international break with a win. The players go into different playing styles and systems on national duty and now we have to get them back into our team.”
